Course Description: This introductory course for health and fitness professionals will teach professionals how to work with clients with diabetes or prediabetes, many of whom may have health complications that must be managed for them to train safely and effectively. This program introduces professionals to the basics about being physically active with diabetes or prediabetes, including types of training that are appropriate and critical, injury prevention, blood glucose monitoring, medication basics (and exercise effects), complications, exercise motivation, and more. CPTs need this information to work with these clients, which is one in three Americans currently (over 115 million Americans). Course Learning Outcomes:
  • Master the basics about diabetes, including the types and potential health complications.
  • Understand the usual responses to physical activity in people with diabetes or prediabetes.
  • Recommend training for diabetes clients that allows them to get fit and remain injury free.
  • Motivate clients with diabetes to be more active by overcoming barriers.
  • Know the limitations associated with exercising with diabetes-related health complications.
  • Understand the basics of working with typical clients with diabetes or prediabetes.

Course Instructor:

Sheri Colberg, PhD, FACSM, is an author, lecturer, consultant, and professor emerita of exercise science at Old Dominion University and a former adjunct professor of internal medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School. Having earned her undergraduate degree from Stanford University and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, she has specialized in research on diabetes and exercise and healthy lifestyles and shaped physical activity recommendations for professional organizations, including the American College of Sports Medicine, American Diabetes Association, and American Association of Diabetes Educators. She has authored 12 books, 26 book chapters, and more than 300 articles on physical activity, diabetes, healthy lifestyles, and aging. Sheri provides education to fitness professionals working with people with diabetes through her own website (www.shericolberg.com). She is the 2016 recipient of the American Diabetes Association’s Outstanding Educator in Diabetes Award.
