There are over 30 muscles that attach to the scapula, which is one of the primary bones that form the shoulder joint. It has been called the “core” of the upper body. Of course, everyone has heard of the “rotator cuff” muscles. Contrary to their name, their primary job is not to rotate the shoulder. It’s to stabilize, just like the “core” in the lumbopelvic region. Unfortunately, as we age, the rotator cuff is vulnerable to injury and tearing, often requiring surgery. If you or your client are over 50, chances are the rotator cuff already has some minor fraying with a little arthritis in the A-C joint. It’s time to rethink strengthening exercises for the older shoulder to protect this vulnerable joint and focus on stabilizing the scapula.

3. Demonstrate at least 3 effective scapular stabilization and rotator cuff strengthening exercises that address postural control and neutral scapular positioning during arm elevation movements.
